Kneedown: a cautionary tale

I've noticed I've been riding a bit cautiously recently so I got the bike out yesterday to do a bit of cornering work on some roundabouts. The one I usually use had a horse wandering around on it so I tried another:

Firstly I usually do a lap around to check the surface and for loose debris. All clear, so I picked up the pace and stuck a knee out then all of a sudden the handlebars almost shake out of my hands, the frontwheel leaves the tarmac and I somehow manage to keep the bike upright.

oh snap didn't see this I must have been looking on the inside and failed to spot this when my speed and turning circle radius increased. This thing was 5-6cm long.

White mark on the left where my front hit it. It was the closest I've come to dropping a bike on public roads.

looks like you were lucky to keep it upright after hitting that.
