No gears - stuck with no drive.
What a ****er!
I'm enjoying the sunshine after not riding for 3 weeks and pulling up at the motorway intersection I find I cannot select any gears... grrr... After bending the Gear Shifter and not having any luck, I get towed home in shame and hit the Haynes manual... Anyone have any clue as to the £ damage to change a gearbox or possibly just the selector drum & forks (if i'm lucky)? |
Re: Aaargh!!! No gears!!!
For a start is the lever nice and free? If it's not returned from selecting one gear then all you are doing is reselecting the same one.

Re: Aaargh!!! No gears!!!
yup, what he said. happened to me not long ago and it was just grit under the washer on the gearlevel/hanger rod thingy bit.
Doing it by hand i could feel it not disengage gear until i pulled it down just a touch, so i stripped the hanger and peg off the frame and cleaned it all up and re lubed it. Happy days. |

Re: Aaargh!!! No gears!!!
Teardown time. With luck it will be something loose, snapped or worn in the external shift mechanism.
As I understand there must be a small area of neutral in between gears, for the box to be in between gears and stuck there I can't think how this would happen internally unless something was seriously amiss like a really badly bent selector fork. Have you managed to get any form of movement in the 'box since? Or is it still stuck in a neutral? |
