My fuel warning light is lying!!

Hi all,

I have a naked '07 plate 650 pointy.

The bike was delivered with a full tank and so far I've filled it up twice. Each time the yellow fuel warning light starts blinking after about 110 miles (tank still half full). I can ignore it until it gets to 130 miles, then it p*sses me off and it takes about £10 worth of petrol to fill the tank up again.

This means two things:

1) Suzuki aren't lying when they say the SV650 has fantastic fuel economy :)

... BUT ...

2) The bike has a 17 litre tank ... petrol is currently just under £1/litre, so I would expect the fuel warning light to start flashing after about 200 miles and I would expect to be able to put between £15 and £16 worth of petrol into the tank at that point.

In other words, the fuel warning light is kicking in when the tank is about half full! Also, if I shake the bike with the fuel warning light blinking away, I can hear and feel plenty of fuel in the tank!

Last time I tried ignoring the light, knowing full well that I had plenty of fuel left, but the damn thing blinking at me all the time is very irritating, so I give in and fill it up ... with another £10 worth of petrol

So ... any ideas as to why my fuel warning light is coming on so soon?!

Are you briming the tank full enough?

Why don't you just run it dry and find out that the tank isn't lying. :D

I think so, I put the end of the fuel gun in until it hits the big washer-like thing below the fuel cap and will go in no further - then I squeeze until the gun shuts itself off. I can see fuel about an inch below the fuel cap.

Fill it up to the brim, I just poke the end in and fill up till it's just about overflowing.

Fuel pumps have variably adjustable pumping speeds! Use ya bloody finger. Or alternatively shoot the c*ck in the BMW with it.

I would fill up til the fuel touches the bottom of the fuel cap with the bike upright. Not sure how much difference that is

I don't think it is going to be a great deal of different TBH - the fuel is almost there anyway.

Just run it until it stops blinking and just stays on. Then you should be nearer to empty.
