faulty rear brake light

When applying pressure to the rear brake lever, it gets to a certain point (somewhere around the type of pressure on the rear brake you would put on for a sudden stop but not locking the rear tyre) and makes a click noise and you can feel as if something has happened. The brake works fine but on the click noise the rear brake light goes out.

Does anyone have any ideas? I had thought it was the brake light switch, but if this was faulty, surely the light wouldn't work at all?

I had to replace my rear brake light switch last year because it would work when the pedal was pushed down but then if you pushed it down further it would go out
