Nail in rear tyre.
Hi all,
To my annoyance, I saw on Saturday that my rear tyre was flat. On filling it back up with air, I took a look 'round and noticed an embedded nail. I did the "spit test", and yes it is leaking. Boo!!! The tyre is almost new so I'd be really cheesed if I needed to get a new one. Can I get this repaired or should I bite the bullet and get a new one? And advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! |
Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Should be able to get it repaired...take it to local shop..

Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Been there done that, if its in the middle third of the tread then it should be an easy repair, recently did mine myself in a layby in the rain. However if you are at home i'd take it to a shop as it'll cost as much if not more for the repair kit as it will for them to do it.

Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Had a few of those and had them repaired properly by a garage for about £35 and they have been as good as new after that.

Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Yeah repair it. I had a puncture plugged in my 500 mile-old tyre, and it has (touch wood) been perfect since. When you see it done it will give you faith. Not what you want but a viable alternative to forking out for a tyre every time. Cost me £15 or so I think.
Don't be surprised if they ask what speed rating the tyre is, iirc it's not something that is "supposed" to be done to Z rated tyres. |
Re: Nail in rear tyre.
+1 on the repair. Take it to a garage and get it plugged.
Matt got a nail in his tyre and dithered over whether to get a new tyre or a repair. He got it repaired. Good job he did because he got another nail puncture 2 weeks later when we were on our way to Brighton. It was a nightmare being 2 up and stopping for air at every petrol station (literally) in an attempt to get home  |
Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Just had mine plugged from the inside after picking up a nail in my 800mile old rear tyre. Charged me £30 which i was pleased with, much cheaper than a new tyre!!! :-D Tested it well on Saturday in the pooring rain and felt as good as ever!!!

Re: Nail in rear tyre.
AA repair mine for me as part of my cover for free! takes about 3 minutes or you can get the repair kits and do it yourself :), had 2 done so far, they make you sign a declaration saying you won't go over 40MPH on it or do more than 100 miles or something, but I had both over 130mph and rode one until it died just a little short of where it normally would (almost legal minimum tread but start to leak air very slightly at speed so after a motorway leg the rear would be a little softer than I started with).
Second one (puncture after 200 miles on new tyre after replacing above GRRRRR) I've done 1,000 miles on and it's got a lot left it in, motorway and london filtering, doing fine! |
Re: Nail in rear tyre.
Oo that said Essential Rubber in London have a poster up for one of their tyre brands that have a puncture garuntee, if you pick up a puncture they replace it like for like free (probably only once per trye but I don't know...will prolly do that next time).

However the small print limits them to about 1k miles or something so not ideal. In saying that, Essential will properly repair (if possible) a tyre using a mushroom/patch from the inside for about £20. |
