2 more problems to the ever increasing list
 

Right, once again I need the wisdom of SV owners who know what they are doing when it comes to problems.

First off, my pointy seems to have developed a strange noise when over 40mph. Its sounds a bit like a knackered fan belt on a car, only nowhere near as loud, but it is as annoying. Does anyone have any ideas what this is and how to stop it?

Second, I replaced the seals on my front callipers the other week and spent a ridiculous amount of time bleeding the air out. I can confirm that there is no air in there whatsoever, but the front lever is still very spongy. I took the calliper of the wheel and pumped the brake. The pistons move out fine, but as far as they come out on one squeeze, they go straight back in when the lever is released. This means that it doesn’t push the pad against the disk until about halfway through the travel on the lever… how do I fix this?

My first impression is that these two problems are related to the brake rebuild.

The fan belt squeal type problem is most likely the something trailing or rubbing on the discs.

Can you wheel the bike around slowly to check for anything dragging on the front discs?

The other issue may be the seals are pulling the pistons back into the calipers too far. Did you clean the pistons to a high shine and lubricate them well (with red rubber grease) before refitting them?

well... I did shine them up, but I didnt apply any red grease... I have never had this problem before when replacing the rubbers.
So will I have to re-service the calipers now?

Do you have rubber hoses or braided lines? Even though said you don't, it sounds to me like you still have air trapped. There is also the possibilty a dust seal has been pulled out of it's seated groove and is being pushed and pulled along the piston as you are applying the brakes.

Ok, update!

I have braided hose's. I have just bled the lines again and there were only a couple of very small bubbles.

Also, it seems this knackered fan belt noise is actually the calipers wiggling! To test it I gently applied the brakes and when the pad met the caliper the noise vanished. I got off and gave the calipers a wiggle about and they make the same sort of noise!!

So now where do I go from here?

The calipers move on greased slider pins. Are they greased or just full of white powder?
