Exhausts / Cans / Slip-ons

Hi Guys, Im hoping that you can help me out and clear up a few things regarding exhausts/cans/slip-ons. I am a noob and honestly do not know much mechanically about bikes.

I passed my test 2 months ago and brought a SV650 Sport K9 and am looking at changing the exhaust to get a better sound but i have no idea what i am looking for!

Is there a different type of exhaust?
Whats the difference between them?
Where do i buy them?
How much do they cost?
Are they easy to fit?
Whats the difference/point of a baffle?

I am not that bothered about increasing the BHP as the bike is plenty fast for me! :riding:

Also i cant find anything for the K9. Is it the same as the K8 in regards to the parts?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Anthony

Is there a different type of exhaust? - End can is just the end can, full system is the pipework from the engine right through to the end can...

Whats the difference between them? - End cans, not alot really, just how they look most of the time. "Race Cans" generally dont come with baffles (nor the option to fit one) and are not e-marked for road use. Think its a £30 fine if you get caught using one.

Where do i buy them? Direct from Manufacturers, Ebay, Bike shops, anywhere you can find the one you want with the lowest price... A few manufacturers who seem to crop up time and time again are: Beowulf, Fuel, Carbon Can Co, Leo Vince, Scorpion.... there's loads of them :)

How much do they cost? - seems to vary wildly from can to can. You can get a decent condition used non branded can for £30-£50 off ebay, or a middle weight can new for about £150'ish from the likes of beowulf, or you can go mental and get a full carbon/titanium can from akrapovic etc... for much more.

Are they easy to fit? - Fairly easiy, it's case of cutting the pipework with a hacksaw or angle grinder.. Most cans come with a 'connector pipe' which connects your newly cut pipework to your nice new can... If you're unsure about fitting it, post up in the regional section and find out who's done it before & if they'd be willing to help/do it for you.

Whats the difference/point of a baffle? - Baffles are designed to slow the gas flow down slightly and also suppress the noise a bit. £30 fine if you get caught riding without them in...

I am not that bothered about increasing the BHP as the bike is plenty fast for me!
:riding: End cans only really make the bike louder, if you're after more power then a full system will unlock a tiny bit more power (1-3 bhp some people reckon)...

Also i cant find anything for the K9. Is it the same as the K8 in regards to the parts? - All the sv650's from 2005 have generally been identical in terms of mechanicals/equipment etc... with cosmetic changes such as different paint schemes and the like. A manufacturer should be able to confirm that their can will or won't fit your bike.

Thanks in advance
Anthony

Hope some of this helps :)

Welcome to the org

Quick answers:

Is there a different type of exhaust? Not really - go for a slip on that you like the look of and fits your budget.

Whats the difference between them? 2 things really - slip on (tail piece only) or full system. For the SV a slip on is mor ethan enough to acheive what you're looking for and it means you don't have to think about remap's etc etc.

Where do i buy them? Online, at a bike shop, fleabay or here... they can be bought all over the place.

How much do they cost? How long is a piece of string? A budget of £150 - 200 will get you a good quality piece of kit. It won't be the best, but it'll certainly do the job.

Are they easy to fit? Yes, although you'll have to cut the original behind the weld under your footpeg (circa 55mm towards the end can from the weld). That can be a pain.

Whats the difference/point of a baffle? Noise levels, bit of emission control and/or restriction.

Recommend looking at these: Carbon Can Company, Fuel, Beowulf...

or if your budgets a bit bigger: Scorpion, Blue Flame, Remus, Viper...

Who cares about money: Akrapovic, Yoshimura, Leo Vince...

As already said any part from 2005 (K5) onwards will fit.
