Wheel spacers?

Working on Project British Rail again tonight (my rear wheel swap... Now delayed for so long that the strada rear tyre I threw on as a stopgap is almost completely worn out, so now i have to get the ball rolling before I buy another tyre...)

Anyway, I noticed something which I'd missed before... All the weight bearing spacers in this dymag wheel are aluminium. I thought that was basically a no-no? All the bearings were spaced down from 25mm for a 20mm axle, and it's all the original dymag kit. Is that sensible then? When I get my own made, could I do the same, or do you reckon it's some sort of wonder ally?

I accept that to the experts out there this is going to sound really dumb, but... I didn't think that spacers took any weight?

I thought that spacers were, for example in a wheel application, just used to ensure position of the wheel in relation to the axle etc and were not structurally integral except with relation to lateral forces to stop the wheel from shifting side to side out of line?

Or having reread your post do you mean that the wheel bearings were for a 25mm axle and you've added a spacer within the inner race of the bearing to accept a 20mm axle?

Re: Wheel spacers?

Nah, not stupid at all, I could have been clearer- the bearings are all 25mm id throughout, but Dymag then fit captive spacers that fit into the bearings so they basically sleeve the bearings down to 20mm (this was originally for a CBR of some sort). It's these ones which are aluminium.

All this is the standard Dymag kit, I'm just measuring up for my own replacements for the SV's 17mm axle. I could just whack one big 17mm/20mm tube right through it but it wants new bearings anyway and it'd still need some new ones to centre it anyway, so I might as well go the whole hog.

I understand now. I'm no help at all, just interested in cool projects like this.

They'd be fine mate. I'm not sure about the wonder Ally bit hehe but I can find out from a man who knows, if you want :)

I'd have them hard Anodised too.

Ben
EDIT: I'd say, go for a 17mm/25mm. You'd be needing three spacers?

You can't get bearings with 17mm ID & original OD ?

Good afternoon all.

I would be inclined to make some stepped spacers out of a decent grade of engineering steel.
The one in between the bearings need to step down into the bearing on one side, & the spacer on the other side that goes between the fork leg & the bearing needs to be stepped down into the bearing from the outside.

This is a trick I've used on several occasions when fitting Thunderace front wheels to V-Maxes etc.

If I still had my Lathe I'd knock them up for you, but sadly it had to go when I moved south, but didn't you have a small Lathe yourself Northy?

Cheers.

If you get stuck for a lathe my neighbour has one - if I can get the specs of whats needed I am sure I can get them sorted out with minimal hassle.
