Housemate woes

Minor rant here.

A year ago I moved out of a flat I shared with my best friend and into a house-share with another guy. I'd met him a few times and he was ok, but I didn't get much say in the matter - my best friend had told him it'd be fine without really consulting me.

We moved in, and everthing was good for a month. Then his rent didn't get paid. Same the month after, then he put in 1 month. We then had bank-charges due to his non-payment, which we tallied on to his debt.

For the last 10 months I've been chasing this, and he's down to owing us £85 out of the £475 he owed at one point. In December he tried to tell us that he didn't owe us any money at all because he'd done a large food shop. I very calmly (barely raising my voice, very little red-in-the-face shouting at all) told him that there's no way that he'd spent £475 on food without us noticing, and if he had, I'd like to see the bank-statements as we'd had basically no food in the house from Oct-Dec.

During the time he's been here he's become more and more lazy. He'll leave washing up for days at a time, often until we tell him to get it done because it's rank. He puts food into the sink side-compartment and doesn't clean it, so that within a day or two it's gone all mouldy. He's never vacuumed or cleaned a bathroom since we moved in, despite us telling him to repeatedly. He's let the bin overflow and then complains that it's not been taken out. Right now there's a pile of pizza boxes in the kitchen that he's left, despite the bin being close by.

I used to just clean up after him after a few days, but I got sick of that about 2 months back and told him that I won't do it any more. He threw a tantrum.

To top it all off, our contract runs out on August 27th, and he's just text my best friend letting him know that he's moving out. He was househunting for the last 2 months, but didn't let us know, despite me talking to both housemates about it over a month ago when the estate agent asked us what we were doing. He's giving us 30 days notice to find a new housemate or find somewhere else to live. He's not even told me yet, probably out of fear that I'm going to kill him. Which is likely.

So, the poll: If I murdered him during the night, do you reckon a court would convict me for murder or manslaughter? Or do you reckon they'd award me a medal for helping clean up a large pile of uselessness?

Ouch, I had a similar situation and ended up moving out, some people just get stubborn and the more you try to get them to sort it out, the more determined they are to be lazy about it :(.
Not sure what you can do but you have my condolences, and I know a nice pig farm if you want the address :)

Ah the joys of a house share eh? I know death for him seems the best solution right now but just let the idiot move out, replace him with someone who is vetted properly.
Hopefully for you the people at the next house wont have internet access to ask this question so will just resort to a pillow over the face for him :)

Problem is that I don't want to move out - we live in a nice house in a good area, big garage for the bikes and everything that we want just around the corner. But we can't afford to keep the house with just 2 housemates (or at least, not for more than a month). Unfortunately, we've only got 30 days to replace him, so it's going to be a massive problem, since I'm working overtime as it is, so don't get much free time.

We've got another friend who wants to move in, but can't quite manage the financial side of it at the moment. He's coming around tonight to see if we can work something out, but it's not looking hopeful, and if we DO work something out, it's likely going to be a hike in rent for me and my best friend so this guy can have lower rent (which isn't totally unfair, as he'd have the smallest bedroom).

As long as you were prepared to stand in court and saw it was auto erotic asphixiation(sp) and you were in a relationship youd probably manage a death by mis adventure verdict.

Cheers guys, given me a few laughs which has helped with the overwhelming urge to put his body through a mincer and feed him to his girlfriend in cottage pies over the next few months. :thumright:
