Had my first "tankslapper" today

Note to self: Don't ever accelerate hard over rumble strips.

Was on a 60 mph country road accelerating pretty hard, when I went over some pretty large yellow rumble strips that spanned the full width of the road. They were larger than most I have seen before. The bars shook pretty violently (not quite slapping the tank but not far off) and I quickly let off the throttle. :smt107

Needless to say I proper shat myself and rode all the way home at 30mph. Only passed my test 2 weeks ago so still got a lot to learn!!

Bet that woke you up! glad you're Ok for it :)
I tend to take it easy on anything like that anyway as I've found they don't tend to offer a heck of a lot of grip when wet either :)

Yeah it woke me up alright! lol. It shook me up pretty bad because there was a van coming in the other direction so if I'd have lost control I'd have probably been a goner.... I was going pretty fast.

I'm definately going to take it easy from now on.

Only ever had one, and it scared the brown stuff out of me.

I was taught that you should, slowly, accelerate out of a 'slapper, i.e. shift the weight to the back rather than apply the brakes or roll off the throttle as this puts more weight on the front causing the 'slapper to get worse - not something i've experimented with, nor intend to!

Like Bri said, you are supposed to accelerate out... well thats the general guidence given by most people, but if closing the throttle worked then fair play.

I can tell you that the SV felt a lot less stable than my falco does, a lot twitchier. Maybe something to do with less weight on the front and more on the back?

Yeah same I've been told to accelerate out of it, or do what Rossi does and just wheelie the trouble making front wheel off the floor until it calms down =p

I've only had one tankslapper before. That was when I coul;dnt avoid a car.

It wasn't the sort of tankslapper you had.

Yea, just be careful in future :D Takes alot to get an SV to slap but I have had waggles through the handlebars aswell acelerating on very raised white lines and stuff

That's good advice, whenever I encounter a 'slapper' these days I get the hell out of there ASAP. Don't know about on a motorbike though!

The idea of accelerating out comes from dirt biking - they technique is to keep the front wheel light/wheeling slightly to track over bumps and avoid tankslappers.

If you have a proper slapper (and not just a wiggle of the bars) remember to check your front brakes before you need to use them as the force can push the pistons back into the caliper.

+1

But it is really hard to make the SV have a proper slapper.
