Strange electrical and mechanical cutting out issue

Hi

I have a 2007 SV650 which has developed an issue where it will completely cut out. By that I mean a complete loss of electrics (screen goes blank and rev counter dies etc) at the same time if I dip the clutch the engine will cut out.

This happened at just over 70mph on the motorway yesterday which was scary!

I have had a look at the connections and it looks OK. I checked the battery and its just over 12v when the bike is idling and goes up to just under 14V when revving.

Any ideas????

Good evening.

It's obviously a main power issue, so start checking every connection from your battery onwards.
Check the connections to & from the solenoid, & also the main fuse located within. Check the connections to the ignition switch etc.

Cheers.

Thanks

Does it sound like my battery is ok though?

DO you use the bike quite often? The battery shouldnt be goosed on a 2 year old bike, and from the readings you have (12v idle, 14 v with more revs) it sounds like your charging system is doing the right job :D

Na, this is more likely a connection thing. Like spannerman said (and beleive me, you can trust his wisdom, he knows his onions when it comes to bikes) check the conections starting at the battery (are they all screwed down tight? is there any corrosion?) then work your way around the bike. Get some electrical contact cleaner to clean up any conector blocks you find (they can get water in them) :), and check the connections inside the fairing nose-cone (sorry, you'll have to take it off!)...i dont know about later model SV's but early SV's can get a fair amount of water in there

Good morning.

Good luck on getting it sorted, as that Alpine chappy says, clean all the electrical plugs with contact cleaner.

Cheers for the plug Matt

Cheers.

Yep sounds like the main fuse area. (The one behind the right hand infill panel)
Check for loose wires/connections and corrosion in the plugs there.
