Removing Front Mudguard Screws
Greetings All.
In typical Suzuki fashion the forks on my K3 are minging. I had the wheels off today to have new tyres fitted. I thought I would have a go at cleaning the forks up and giving them a fresh coat of paint. I could not shift the large polished front screw on either side, I could feel the heads begin to chew up, so I stopped there. As the mudguard is still there, heat is out of the question. I am guessing I will have to drill them out and re-tap the thread. Has anybody else had this trouble and how did you solve it? Thanks Tim. |

You'll be able to drill the head off the screw or drill a hole into the screw and use an easy out to remove it.

They are not screws (or at least weren't on my K3), but allen bolts with a large flat head. Tried an allen key?

Don't use an easyout or similar horror. If the head won't turn it out without rounding off, it's exceedingly unlikely a hardened tap, (which is essentially what such things are), will move the corroded section from the thread in the fork leg without snapping and making things worse.
Get a 10mm drill bit and drill into the recess just until the head comes free - you'll now be able to remove the mudguard. When it's off you'll see the bit that's left is a sizeable cylinder that can be gripped with a suitable tool in order to turn it out - this is the piece that's inside the guard when it's fitted. |

The reason they don't come off is because they are made of soft cheese so the allen key can't grip the head. An easy out does the trick every time, its been put to use enough times on my bike!
