I.T. Help required ref Windows 7
 

currently running XP.
I've renamed D drive to Windows 7 and installed a clean copy onto D drive.
when the computer installed it, i went to re boot and expected to find a multi boot menu asking if I wanted XP or Windows 7....
no It went stright into Windows 7,
I went to the windows explorer, only to find.... and god knows hows it done it.......

C drive is now Windows 7 and d drive is my old XP. (all XP data and files are still there..)

So can anyone help in me getting a Multi boot system running..

Have you trawled google? Can't say I've ever set up a dual boot system but I know it's well documented on the net.

Slim chance that both harddrives / partitions are listed on your boot menu (most common is tapping f12 or f9 on start up). You may be able to get into xp that way

yes, but no answers for what's happen'd , as in Windows 7 was the D drive and has now changed to the C drive and the old XP C drive is now the D Drive...

I think what's will have happened is windows 7 has been made the primary drive, one drive takes priority over the other and I think this stops you changing the letters. You could try rightclicking to my computer and pressing manage (or finding your disk manager however you normally do) and trying to swap the letters but I don't think it'll let you as it's a primary OS on C:.

Or you could wipe the windows 7 drive and make xp your main one again and start over on the windows 7 front.

If you press win+Break you should get a box pop up in windows, choose the advanced settings down the left hand side, third settings button for startup and recovery. see if both are listed in the drop down box, it may be its just not giving you the menu. unlikely but its the easiest thing to check first.
Otherwise I *Think* if you boot from the Win 7 CD and choose repair you should get a menu with some options on like repair boot, which it will scan for other windows installs.

there did used to be another button on the dropdown box on startup and recovery options that you could click edit and change the boot.ini file manually to reference whichever hard disk you wanted. seems they have removed it though.

Anyway, just a quick stab in the dark, with any luck someone will have a more comprehensive answer but it might point you in the right direction.

Re the drive letters, nothing has changed, just the labels attached to them, when you get it to boot into XP that will be on C: and windows 7 will be on D: its just how each installed OS lists them, its just an ordered list. no data has been moved or harmed :)

it gets a little confusing but in some ways its simpler, boot into either OS and you know you can install stuff to c:\program files etc and it will only be on that OS.

I occasionally do :D hehe. Most things in windows are logical, but not always the best way or the expected way LOL

He's gone quiet, he's either rebooting or FUBAR'd it, hopefully just rebooting and repairing!
