Was I in the wrong?
Well, Wednesday I was on my bike on the way to the gym.
It may have been the wrong thing to do in some people's opinion, dad said I should have let them overtake then carry on, however here's the story; As I was riding down my street a Volvo estate pulled out from a side street very quick behind me, I turned left at a roundabout and accelerated off quite hard, to find out when I looked in the mirror they were right up my ****! It was on a 30 so I just accelerated hard to 30, after crossing 2 roundabouts, and a quite nasty speed bump, they were tail gating me. The road I was going down now has a blind exit from the local college and pub liturally next to each other, so as I approach I slow down to 20 - 25mph as people fly out not even looking! As I passed these entrances the Volvo was less than a metre away from the rear of my bike, so I progressed to 30 to find the Volvo driver indicating to overtake! As it was a residential area and they'd been harrassing me for such a long distance I accelerated as to not let them pass I thought overtaking in a residential area at 1:30pm when the limit was 30 and I was stuck on it, I thought overtaking was inapprorpiate, as there was a junction either side within 200 yards and there was no need to do so. The roundabout at the bottom of the road I was to turn right and so was she, she overtook me on the roundabout, nearly clipping my leg. I couldn't believe it! Following this I kept a fair distance back, for mainly my own safety as the **** nearly knocked me off, and as I knew there were traffic lights ahead approaching into town. To no surprise the lights were on red, I pulled up next to her, would of said she was 50 - 60, knocked on her window and shouted that the limit is 30. She ignored me for the first 30 seconds and then started to shake her head at me! However, thinking about it now I was out of order to speed up cos I would of been able to keep up and have a word anyway, but it was the fact she shook her head and denied she was in the wrong. Next time just let them do it and leave it be? |

Re: Was I in the wrong?
Ach cagers, you get used to them after a while.
The sensible thing to do is pull over. More rewarding thing to do is 'accidently' make contact with their mirror with you're armoured gloves. ;) |
Re: Was I in the wrong?
Next time let her overtake, get her reg and then report her!
Idiots like that kill bikers and should get the minimum of a bit of a scary phonecall from the police! Unfortunately you cant do that if you aggravate the situation :( |
Re: Was I in the wrong?
Pull up next to her at the lights and claim your free wing mirror...

Re: Was I in the wrong?
I understand why you did it as in my car and on my bike i've been guilty of speeding up to try and stop the tailgateing to no advance as they keep up with you. I'm also gulity of tailgating when people are doing 20-25 in a 30! (must point out never a bike)
But in the heat of the moment you can't stop yourself its only after when you think.... sh!t really should not of done that! Leason learnt just be careful of cars! and when you next see that volvo just pull over and let her go.... then carry on with your journey ;) |
Re: Was I in the wrong?
I think we've all done what you did and in hindsight thought it better to let them past. One of those situations that really annoys you, and you wonder what you could have done to stop getting so wound up when the answer is... besides letting them past, not much. Oblivious drivers that sooner or later are going to hurt/kill someone and probably not learn from it either.
