camping with the bike for the first time this weekend!

Hi all ,

right, my girlfriend and i are going up to Wales to watch some racing.
we go on saturday and return Sunday, ive never been camping with the bike and not travelled that far before.

we have a normal tent and normal sleeping bags... is this going to be our first problem ?

im not entirely sure what i need to take to survive so if someone's done it before id love a list :)

i dont have panniers or a tank bag, i do have two backpacks and a sat nav.

whats the diagnosis?

cheers

whats a "normal" tent or normal sleeping bag for that matter?

If you look thru the AR09 section i;m sure we had a thread going there about things to bring/pack.

Are you guys planning to stay and eat in the wilderness to, or taking the easy option and eating in pubs/restaurants?

That will obviously make a difference about what you need to pack etc.

well you have 3 choices then imho.

1. Buy and pack cooking stuff to take with you
2. Plant to leave stuff at the campsite and go out on the bike looking for somewhere to eat (most tracks have facilities but they can be very expensive from experience)
3. Spot the nearest supermarket on your way in and either stop, or return to it, and buy disposable BBQs and stuff to cook on it.

Personally i'd go for 2 or 3 myself.

Now explain your "normal" stuff please, lol.

2&3 sound perfect to me.

like stuff ade for taking in cars. biker tents and sleeping bags are smaller in width when all rolled up

Erm to a degree. Sleeping bags should be able to compress down far, till all the air is out basically. The width/length of the packed up tent will only really matter when you're filtering tbh. Seating space may be tight tho, i use the pillion seat for my gear and sleeping bag etc so dunno where you'll put all that if you have your g/f there.

Others have done it, so its deffo doable. Just pack light!

Not good IMO.

We travel light but use panniers and don't camp.

Your G/F is new to this biking lark and wearing a rucksack is not going to make it fun at all, plus I'm not sure there's room for you to wear one too. Get a rack, and some panniers, even if you have to borrow them.

I could do a weekend with a tankbag and rucksack, two of you are going to need panniers or a very hedonistic approach to wearing used clothing...;)

Oxford do several sets of panniers that throw over the back seat, from ~£50 to >£100

You'll have a laugh travelling light and learning to pack lighter is an art in itself, you can always go one step further

Have a good one:cool:
