Curvy/pointy differences?

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Fellow SVers

Re my excited post on Saturday where I declared my undying love for SVs by buying a 'new' 06 pointy to accompany my ageing 2000 curvy.

Garage wouldn't do a trade-in as the guy reckons 37,000 miles on a bike is like trying to trade-in a car at 90K miles (i.e. he's not interested).

So ... moving from a 2000 curvy S to a 2006 pointy S, what are the main differences I should notice in terms of the ride, power, handling and importantly wear and tear.

Attached a pic of the new bike. Getting it next Saturday! :D

Cheers

Tony from sunny-ish Burnley

I replied to your last thread!?!?!?!?

I wrote:

Nice. (as in your new bike!)

Can't comment on a curvy as never had one, but I'm on my 2nd Pointy and love it. (had a gsxr750 in between both SVs)

(can't remember exactly what I wrote here....)

Be aware of the chain adjusters on the pointys. They may as well be made from cheese.

They, if not very careful, will lunch your nice black swinging arm by scraping it.

They have a tendancy to be stuck against the nut, then they move with the nut, hit the swing-arm, bend and destroy.

Good eh!!

Apart from that, and usual maintainance, they're all good.

Cheers hovis. That's why I bought it I think, stead-away, you know what you're getting ... not a Ninja, but then I use it for commuting mainly anyway.

Curvy has lasted 6 years since I bought her with 6400 on the clock. Replaced sprockets and chain twice (am up to 37000+) and had a couple of tyre replacements (Conti Road Attacks).

Gonna run the Curvy in the worst of the weather and keep the pointy as fresh as possible.

Cheers

Thats OK mate!! :D

Yes, I suffered the swing-arm destruction on my first SV, needless to say, I was not very happy.

I had to adjust my chain on my current one the other weekend.....talk about apprehensive!!!

Still, it went ok.

Re: Is anyone prepared to help!!

By the way ... does anyone think that if I hung onto the curvy for another 10 years, there'll be some one wanting to do a full restore on an as standard SV ... or do you think there are too many of them around?

You know, like your classic Ariels, and BSAs (or am I way off mark?!)

You never know.....

Try and keep it nice and someone will want it for sure!!

I'm restoring a 1981 TS185ER at the moment, I bet when they were "around" people never thought of them as being a classic one day!! (some still wouldn't!)

Future classic in mint condition.

Same as the original Ford Escort, reason being is that no one ever considered them to be future classics, although they sold thousands no one kept any mint or bothered to keep it standard, most were crashed or just scrapped, now a mk1 concourse condition escort is worth quite a bit.

With the SV you'll also have the same "first bike" rosy glasses of people returning to biking after a spell away.

Does mean you'll have to keep it for about 30 years though! ;-)
