Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
I got offered a job yesterday based in Cardiff :)
I need to fins somewhere to live now, so does anyone know what areas in and arround cardiff to avoid/go for? Im looking for a cheepish place that isnt in a warzone. Dont mind ex council houses but dont want to be on a rough estate. any help would be great as I dont know anyone from there to ask for help and wouldnt trust an estate agent! |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
oh dear
i would be looking outside cardiff, as its either like iraq or mayfair, there is not a lot inbetween stay away from ely, canton, butetown, grangetown...... theres probably more the bay is nice, but not cheap how far are you willing to commute? are you looking to buy or rent |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
ideally buy, it will also be my first buy.
Ive been looking outside and north of cardiff, caerphilly, pontypridd and that area. I dont mind abit of a commute, say 30/45mins, if I can get a place that makes it worth while. I want to be on this side of the bridge, but going towards newport is also an option, but again, I have no idea of the area. |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
newport is worse than cardiff IMO
i would advise a pm to sarah, zombie jesus or jabba as they know more about cardiff caerphilly is pretty good, and you have 4 org members within 2-3 miles. and only 15-20 mins from cardiff on a bike |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
caerphilliy just looks like a warzone

Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
any views on pontypridd?

Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
phillys better than ponty (imo)
like all places have the good and bad bits. and the futher up the vallies you go, the cheaper it is |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
ponty full of students housing can be shocking quaility or shocking pricewise if in cage can take an age to get into cardiff in the morning but train is ok and bike is fine if you don't mind some highspeed filtering

Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
Good places are Roath, Cathays, Llanishen, Cyncoed, Pontcanna, Thornhill, Lisvane, and possibly the Bay (lots of new flats down there). Avoid Ely, Splott, Riverside, Adamsdown (often estate agents will try to fob you off calling it 'Lower Roath'), Tremorfa, Llanederyn, Llanrumney. Canton and Grangetown, it depends entirely on the area. Some streets can look nice but turn the corner and it's Basra.
The further up the valleys you go, the dodgier the people seem to get :p |
Re: Got a job! need a house in cardiff help!
thanks guys. I know about the traffic in cardiff, but the bike is my friend :)
I will go and have a look at some places next weekend, try and view as many places as possible to get a feel of the different areas. I dont want to go too high into the vallies, but I do like the price drops :) there are some really good fixed rate morgages about, so I think its a good time to be buying. |
