This bugs me.

Just watching the news and it reminded me because they said that these "gold buyers" will pay you a lot less than what its actualy worth.

Any way i first noticed it when one of these !post in your phone and we'll give you cash" companies appered, ok thats one, then all the sudden i see 20 different adverts the next day!

Now its the same with this gold thingy gotgoldgetcash.co.uk, postalgold.co.uk ffs! how do these people do it? just pop up a company over night and have the money to pay the staff and you for your goods you sell to them?

I'd imagine their shopping list looks something like this...

1) Buy an off the shelf company for £500 and rent a two room office from Regus on a monthly basis
2) Pay a commercial call centre company to handle their calls on a 3 month rolling contract.
3) Pay for a freepost address
4) Get 10,000 envelopes printed
5) Hire two contract staff to send out envelopes and sort the ones that come back in.
6) Pay a jeweller a small fee to examine the hallmarks and calculate the gold value of the stuff that comes in.
7) Spend a pile of money on TV advertising and hope there's enough suckers out there who'll send you their jewellry.

So, basically it's all about having something like £100k in cash up front to spend on advertising, plus about 50k for everything else. The company has almost no fixed assets so it's quick and easy to set up.

If it's making a decent return after six months you start looking for permanent premises, if not you pay yourself a £140k bonus and either sell the business or let it fold.

Its probably just all one big company running lots of little ones so there are more to track / prosecute / shut down

I tried one of those phone thiongs once, £300 worth of Blackberry, they offered me £40
