I was helping my grandson with his maths homework last night and his mother had an argument with the teacher this morning. Can you let me know what you think the answer is and how you achieved the answer

Facts: In my book there are 510 pages. The book has 10 equal chapters,
Question : What page does chapter 9 start on ?

Would really appreciate your thoughts.

i get 409.

510 divided by 10 = 51, easy. 8 chapters before the start of chapter 9, so 8 x 51 and then add one for the page that chapter 9 starts on.

Am i right? Do i win?

Shouldn't this be in Idle Banter?

First page of the book is the title page and un-numbered?

But, if the first page is the title page, that leaves 509 pages for the chapters, which cannot make 10 equal chapters.

except 52-103 (inclusive) is 52 pages, and is the same mistake being made for the later chapters?

My list is:
1. 1-51
2. 52-102
3. 103-153
4. 154-204
5. 205-255
6. 256-306
7. 307-357
8. 358-408
9. 409-459
10. 460-510
So first page of Chapter 9 is page 409. Q.E.D.:)
