Reg/Rec, Oxford Grip Controller
 

I've been looking at D'Ecosse's reg/rec mod, and trying to decide if I should do the wiring part of this mod.

As many have reported, the digital controller is a pile of nonsense. Some mornings it comes on fine, some mornings in doesn't.

Most of the time, it will switch on, after the bike is off choke and warmed up nicely. Some times it doesn't come on at all. Sometimes, dipping the headlights and revving up to around 5.5k they'll switch on.

Having checked through the first 3 criteria in D'Ecosse's instructions, I think reg/rec is ok, took battery out and put on charge, 20mins and switches to maintain, so think it's ok. Readout 12.85 before and exactly 13.00 after.

Digital controller for grips supposed to have a cut-off for 11.5v, so won't kill battery.

Is it likely, that doing wiring mod increase bike running voltage from circa 13.8v to above 14?

I have no interest in replacing the reg/rec, it's ok. Buying an analogue controller for the grips is not an option. The resources I have, for trying to sort this issue, are in knowledge from here, and stock in my tool kit. I cannot afford to spend money on sorting this.

Possibly - but only if the original wiring/connections is/are in some way deficient.
Dump the controller, get a relay and connect in a suitable manner. Then just use an on/off switch, this is cheap and a reliable way of ensuring the batterey isn't flattened and the grips are controlled easily.

As far as I know the reg/rec has a fixed output as that is what it's made to do? the limited output will remain the same unless the unit malfunctions.

I'm not going to read the whole of that article, as you say you aren't going to change your reg/rec, and that seems to be what it's about.

I have a set of HG grips (re-badged Oxford ones) and the digital controller is as you say rubbish, a simple three way switch replaced it and works fine, without spending any money you aren't going to fix the problem, either spend a little or live with it :smt102

I've had problems with my oxford heated grip controller when it was wired into the ignition. I've wired mine to the battery, as oxford recomend, it's working fine.

I don't want to leave it like this and will change it in time but if you don't have much money or the time to sort it perhaps this would settle it for a while?

I contacted Oxford and they will provide me with a new controller for £15, however they have said it will work if wired to the ignition but if it doesn't they will give a full refund.

Thanks folks.

I have a nice discreet waterproof 3 way switch that might suffice, however it looks like going for the older analogue controller will eventually be the route I'll have to take.

For now though, it looks like I'll be splitting the current controller away from the loom and wiring it direct to the battery to see if that helps, might introduce the 3way in this step to make sure the controller does not take any draw at all when off.

Incidentally, despite only taking 20 mins to top the battery up, the grips were on straight away this morning.

I've had my hotgrips wired in this way forever, and they've never given my reg/rect or battery any bother.

Bloody hotgrips given up the ghost last night ........ turning on, blue flashing light .... off !!
Now nothing at all !!

Have we got a definative answer ..... should i be looking for (from Oxford) the latest controller, the first analogue one ....... or something else ???

ive never had any troubles with the old analogue contollers....the later digital ones are renowned for failing...so theres ur answer;)...just fitted a set to the sv, and made sure i fitted the old style contoller:D..they work great

BOOT buddy when we were swapping front ends and changed the wiring loom remember how i said that wiring it to the ignition is weird? Well if you put it directly to the battery might help (sorry if you have done this) also the battery for your bike is not right it was to big think i said it looked like the one for the pointy or alike, its slightly higher mha so that could be a big draw for the reg/rec and generator to put back in. Kind of makes sense when you said they came on straight away after the recharge??

Don't forget the bikes are built to a budget and the machine is probably not able to keep the battery peaked all the time.

Obviously buying a new battery is not an option but i may have a solution that we could look at when you came over?

If you are worried about electrical accessories draining the battery, these are simple to fit in the supply line. That retailer also has a fleabay shop I think.
