Not the normal clutch problems.
 

On the first engagement of the day it goes on with a snap, enough to slip the back tyre half a turn or so. After this it's fine. It's done this for ages.

Normal use, it's fine, nice and progressive.

It's got a little worse lately. Bit of a squeal noise as it "bites" and slips the tyre, and there's somewhat of a ducati-esque clacking at tickover when the clutch is pulled in.


I've got a feeling it could be release bearing/pushrod related. Any better ideas?

Hi Chris, it appears that the fault resolves on usage, a couple of suggestions, 1 a warped or sticking clutch plate, 2 worn/rough ears on "disk" plate catching on a worn/rough clutch cage/cassette?

Did you look inside clutch, maybe you have few broken plates.

It sounds similar to the usual problem of sticking plates. When you're warming the bike up, try pulling the clutch lever in, & releasing it sharply several times (i.e, letting the lever go quickly).
If the problem lessens considerably, then it's sticking plates for sure. This is more common when the clutch is worn, & on the cusp of starting to drag.
The squealing noise could be the release bearing on it's way out. XJ600 Diversions knock out release bearings on a regular basis, & by the time the owner realises something is going awry, the bearing has usually disintegrated, scoring the pushrod & the pressure plate to the point where replacement is neccessary.

Hmmm OK I have clutch apart.

There is some wear of basket, you can feel notches. Hub seems fine, you can see some wear but can't feel owt.
Plates look fine, no heat damage to steels or broken ones.
Release bearing looks to be fine, no visible wear and feels nice and smooth when you spin it with just washer on.


Only thing is friction parts on the 1st friction plate look quite thin. Maybe I will swap plates and see what happens.

Only other abnormality was the clutch hub nut was loose, only held on by the lock washer.

how much is a new bearing? If it's pennies while you've got it apart it's probably worth replacing anyway.

i had a similar problem to this on a bandit 600 turns out with advice from bandit mania that fly sync oil was too slippy full clean out and quality numeral oil all was good again.

Tighten inner hub with that nut and spin it by hand without clutch pack in. It should spin nice and easy. If you feel to much resistance your washer between inner and outer hub is dragging. take look at washer and if you see bushing made mark in washer replace washer. Whe tight this washer can not touch main hub, if it does your clutch will slip.

It is back together now, we see how it goes on todays ride.
