Protecting paintwork after respray

Thinking of splashing out and having the bike resprayed. Since buying it in March, it's acquired a few scratches on the tank and pillion cowl, just from general use, even though I've been fairly careful.

So, other than very expensive aircraft film, what do you do? The tank pad I have is bloody awful and most definitely will not be staying on the bike. I'd like to get away without one, what are the alternatives?

If you've a suggestion, I'd like to hear it, and pictures of course would be even better.
