Should I be getting worried? Question for medical types.
 

Hmmmm my mum has passed out twice or trice in the past couple of weeks. She went to the GP today who said she was aneamic with very high blood pressure and a raging pulse. She is normally fit and well.

Doctor has now told her he think she is bleeding from something, possibly and ulcer and she has to go back on Friday.

Sounds a bit scary...should we be worried or is it something easily sorted once diagnosed?

I had an ulcer and was sorted with tablets once diagnosed. Not had a recurrence. I found out after I passed out in the street, apparently sicking up blood and pooing blood is not normal!

Doctor is on it, if an ulcer it will be sorted easily.

her doctor is an ****.

get her to hospital to get checked out properly.

get her there NOW. it could be nothing or it could be serious, but wouldent you prefer if your mum was in a hospital if it is serious?

why does he think its ok to send someone home if he suspects internal bleeding.

How old is she?
I would have thought that if a normally fit person has developed something that causes regular passing out they should be in hossie.
Did the quack put her on any meds?Like iron for the anaemia or something for the high blood pressure?Sounds like a confused diagnosis as well.Serious bleeding from an ulcer causes fainting,fast pulse and low blood pressure,while anaemia and very high blood pressure can cause fainting as well.Both can be dangerous.

Agree to some extent about the response from the Doctor re:internal bleeding. I would get her checked out to be on the safe side. With regards to an ulcer it really depends wether she has an ulcer in her Oesophagus/Stomach/small intestine etc as to how easy it would be to treat. Generally acid suppressants work in most minor cases. The very fact that she has passed out a few times would worry me and want her to be seen as soon as possible and perhaps have a battery of tests done to fully understand why she is passing out and also the cause for Anemia

just to add i was sent for a cardiograph because my doc suspected there MIGHT be something wrong with my heart. i arrived at the clinic where i was promptly rushed to A&E and given a tablet. i was immediately admitted after that. i was then sent to have a 5 graft by-pass. if i hadent turned up to the clinic i would be dead right now.

Well, she has a pain in the right hand side of her abdomen.

I always thought internal bleeding would cause low blood pressure and not high so I was slightly confused by what she told me. She said the GP said that the anaemia was causing the racing pulse and high blood pressure but that the possible bleed may be causing the anaemia....?

Hey Milky Bar Kid,

I'm sure its nothing to worry about.This sort of thing is more common than you may think.

Anaemia has many causes, but one of the most common by far (for this country at least) is blood loss. All anaemia essentially means is decreased amount of red blood cells. The GP is probably concerned that an ulcer may be bleeding, as he most likely interpreted this from the blood results showing her anaemia.

As for the racing pulse and the high blood pressure...I'm not too sure how that could be linked. You would be at more risk of perforating an ulcer if you have high blood pressure, but do you know if there is a history of high blood pressure for your mother or her family?

Don't worry too much though. Individual blood pressure readings mean nothing, as they can vary significantly due to slight anxiety, or having just walked a bit pacey to make it on time to the Dr's! It may be that your mothers heart beat and pulse were racing that day.

Anyways hope it all gets sorted soon, best of luck...

They don't have the results of her bloods back yet, that's why she's to go back on Friday. And no, there is no history of high blood pressure. My mum is 44.

Good to hear that there is no history of high blood pressue.

I only assumed the bloods were back because there is no other way the GP could have known for sure that your mother was anaemic, unless he was just saying what he thinks might be going on. In which case, do you know why he thought she might be anaemic and have an ulcer?
