R1 (1999) rear wheel in a curvey?
Has anyone done this? I've had a search and there's some hints that it might have been done, but no detail.
I've got a spare R1 back wheel and a shed full of part worn 180's in can use, ya see! |

I did it but by using a JMC top braced swing arm (which I have for sale ;)) which was made to bolt on the SV and take the wheel/caliper.

Hmm...you'll need to measure things like spacers, and clearance between the swingarm and tyre. Bandit 1200 wheels have been used by some other people with differant spacers
Why not get the wheel on there and see how it measures up? You might have some problem with the axle, I imagine an R1 would have a beefier (see: thicker) axle which may not go through the SV swingarm? |

I'm expecting to have to make up new spacers as the R1 spindle is twice the size of the SV twig...the difference will allow for some captive spacers to fit in.

Measure from RHS of swingarm to center of wheel and to disc etc.
There is rear wheel thread here http://forum.svrider.com/showthread....78545&page=130 if you can be bothered to read through all svxr's bullsht about how a gsxr wheel is a million tonnes lighter if you inflate it with unobtanium dioxide there's some pretty good info there. Remember swingarm bends in a few mm. Measure all clearances before you remove OEM wheel. |

why you want to do that? the wheel will most likely be heavier (unless it's a CF?), so you will loose acceleration... R1 runs 190's in the back, the bike will corner like crap with 190 tire in the back... even with 180 you will notice it is slow turning. R1 also uses heavier chain (530), there are 520's for r1, but i have not seen 525.... never looked though, so not too sure .

The wheel will probably be slightly lighter but not enough to offset the larger tyre.
Why you think it will corner crap with a 190 on the back? taller profile will raise back and steepen head angle. You will probably need to use a 520 chain for clearance anyway, people putting GSXR wheel on use 520 front sprocket and flip it over so it is offset outwards. |

i have tried larger size tires on cbr6, gsxr600 and KTM suprduke... they look good, but the result was always 'sluggish' turning... i still have nearly new 190 that i pulled of my SD half way through last track day, it handled so bad. i believe it has something to do with the size of the contact patch, but i'm no expert... Having said that, i do not have much experience with the SV (it's my wife's bike) and never actually tried it on SV...
