Cleaning Brake Discs
Dumb question but I heard that you can use anti corrosion spray on your brake discs to clean them and stop them rusting. Is this good advice? Would the residue from the cleaner impact the braking or am I worrying over nothing?

Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
I sure Muc Off Brake Cleaner personally. Muc Off de-greaser is awesome stuff for the chain too.

Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
A normal bike cleaner / degreaser should be best. Needless to say any lubricants / oils / WD40 etc should, perhaps be put on the back bench for this one.
You can use brake cleaner, but that will help degrease, and remove brake dust, rather than leave a protective fim. Jambo |
Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
If you ride the bike you will find they stay pretty clean from the braking action. ;-)

Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
Don't use any manner of anti corrosion stuff on the friction surfaces. When you use the brakes the pads will clean them for you.

Why do discs need cleaned? I've never even considered cleaning mine in the past 16months or so. |
Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
They need to be cleaned with solvent if you spray any anti corrosion stuff on them :-P

Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
Discs can occasionally benefit from a clean.
One of the most common improvements to both wet weather braking and brake squeal, is to clean the crud out of the holes/slots in the discs. In the wet particularly said crud forms a sticky paste that reduces brake efficiency by a significant degree. Run your finger over the brake disc - when it's cold, obviously - you'll usually feel and see the brake dust on your finger tip. If there's crud on the discs, you'll also find it on the pads - especially in the grooves, if any. Don't use any nomal cleaner, all of which are too oily. Only use brake cleaner, which is an oil free high flashpoint solvent, it will allow you to wipe the brake discs clean but wil evaporate away very quickly. |
Re: Cleaning Brake Discs
Or isopropyl alcohol. But brake cleaner in an aerosol is convenient and not too expensive, and easy to get
