I hate corporate IT Depts

Because they think they know better.

For the past week, I have been chasing my ****, my software has been crashing overnight. Turns out they have a new automatic task that runs on every PC in the company to clean out the temporary directories. Did they tell anyone before they deployed this task. No they just thought it would be a good idea.

So the temporary transaction files behind my data logging system on a test rig that is running 24*7 disappear and my software and the rig shut down for safety.

Thanks IT dept, you really know how to P me off. Now if instead of the rig shutting down, it was to go bang intead (fuel cells so big hydrogen gas supply to it). would you still think it a good idea to delete files on a control PC.

That's why I gave over being a manager. People kept confusing me with the rest of the muppets. Now I get to shout at them.

Can't you just turn your pc off every night?
Or remove the job from the Scheduled Tasks?

or put it on a server....

nah, its a tricky one this. it comes down to managing all clients the same usually rather than catagorising them and dealing with them appropriately.

No the rig runs 24*7 so the logging/control PC must also run.

It isn't a scheduled task. Every PC in the place has an Altiris agent installed and it is that, that is messing with my operation. I am about to mod my code to use a user definable temp location. I guess I should have in the first place.

Well I would think that if the data you say in the temp is required 24/7 then its not really temp as its critical to the tool. Though you would have thought that they used a date rule so that stuff only older then a week or so is removed, we do it here but normally its set to 31 days.

No, the transaction data is temporary, it contains database and serial connection info etc. when the application is stopped the file is automatically deleted. As in temporary for the life of the application being run. This may be 6 hours or 60 depending on what tests the operator wants to undertake. However, if a task is unable to read the file because some prat has deleted it, the control system emergency stops.

In panic mode It is shut down as fast and safely as possible. The hooters trigger, fuel supplies are cut and everyone gets out the lab ASAP. I have few friends left after those on overnight rig sitting duties were sent into the cold the last 2 nights

The data is temporary in its nature but not temporary in its requirement, but this is here nor there. I would simply advices you to move your data and the IT department to change there rules to allow a few days caching.

*******s. The temp file deleting is the latest version of "turn it off and on again". Many IT departments have too much time on their hands and not enough talent. Who cares what your wallpaper is?
