Electrical problem.
 

Ok my electrics seem to be knackered and I was hoping someone else has had something similar before. The ignition turns on fine with the lights on the dash coming on but when I try to start the bike or turn the lights on or press the horn, brakes everything dies. checked voltages at the fuses and it seems that as soon as i turn anything on the voltage drops from 13v down to pretty much nothing. I'm thinking its something to do with the earth side as its the only thing that i can see is common to all. Also if i diconnect the brake lights and operate the brake lever the voltage doesn't drop.

Looks like i'll be stripping more of the bike down to get to all the electrical connections tomorrow.

It could be a bad connector block, possibly the main one from the ingition to the rest of the loom. Get the tank up, there should be a green connector block there - take it apart and check for cleanliness first (clean it with WD40, then some elctrical cleaner if you have some). See how that goes :).

Also, check the connections to the batery are clean and tight

i'll have a look at it. Thought it might have been some sort of alarm issue to begin with so decided to rip that out first. Was meaning to get rid of it anyway. At least its one less electrical thing to worry about

Yea, first thing ym dad did with my bike was rip ou the alamr / imobilizer!

Check the connections to the fuse box aswell

The more i think about it the more i'm thinking its a bad earth somewhere. Going to have to disconect connectors and check it over tommorrow

Rob the common faults that I've seen posted up are.

1. Chafing in the loom around the headstock, it's tied in pretty tight there.
2. Wet or corroded connectors in the big connector block in the left hand side of the fairing

Does sound like it. There is an earth on the engine somewhere (i dont know where...sorry) which gets corroded easily. PM dizzyblonde, she had her's cleaned and her electrics all worked better

Thats exactly what happened to mine the other night! Main fuse holder was full of water and crap as was the starter solenoid terminals.

No. 2 on my list was Dizzy's problem if I remember corrrectly

Sounds like a dodgy earth or battery terminals loose.

Use some copperslip on any earths, works a treat to both prevent corrosion and give a good contact! :)
