I can't believe it

My friend and I were driving down the A1 just out of newcastle (the small stretch that has limited lighting) tonight approx 930pm doing 70mph in the fast lane when all of a sudden I see this woman stood (not walking across....just stood completely still) in the middle of our lane!!!!!

Friend hit the brakes hard and just managed to stop in time (maybe 3-4 foot left before we hit her). She just looks at us, smiles, then steps into the next lane and stands still forcing a people carrier to brake and swerve!

She then calmy wondered across our lane again, climbs over the barrier, and does the same thing in the northbound lanes!! WTF!!!!!!! :smt107

Luckily no one hit her (that we saw, as we had to move down the road a bit) and we called the police who respond quickly. (Hope they got her)

Just wanted to vent. I was shaking for about 20 mins after and I was the one in the passenger seat!!!!

Just think how train drivers feel when people do it to them.

Probably worse than we felt but at least we didnt hit her. (I can't even imagine how it would feel if we hadnt stopped in time :()

My mother and father inlaw had a close call once with a drunk walking down the middle of a dual cariageway late one night. After very nearly hitting said drunk at speed, just managing to swerve out of the way in time, my father inlaw pulled over to see why/what the hell the lad in question was up too. To his shock it was his own son that he came very close to running over, and probably killing had he not avoided him.

Geez, that sounds really scary. Can't believe she just smiled and then moved on. What do you think she was trying to achieve? Some serious self harm, damage to others and herself or just doing it for shi!ts n giggles?!

I seriously think she was trying to kill herself! Who else would move into the next lane and then cross the reservation to try on the otherside? Good job you spotted her in time guy's.

Problem being it would be your word against her family's if you had hit her, even if she was committing suicide so just as well you didn't. I'm sorry but if she wanted to kill herself the "safest" way would be off a bridge to be honest. Why endanger other people's lives? Then again she may have had a mental issue in which case, poor lass.

Called the police today to check the girl was ok, they said they'd picked her up minutes after my call and she was uninjured, but they wouldnt tell us anything else. But at least she was ok and no one else was hurt because of her actions.

I'd still like to know what the hell she was doing, she didnt appear to be drunk as she wasnt stumbling about or anything

I think everyone was really lucky as there was quite a bit of traffic about at the time.
