What are your thoughts on breaking the chain and replacing with a new soft link?

The chains done a fair few thousand miles but is still in fair condition, as are the sprockets. I would like to wait a while before replacing the lot.

What would the chain run like with a new link?

Is it just the rollers that wear causing the chain to "streach" or will the new link be a bit shorter than the rest giving me more problems than are worth it?

Alternatively, could I remove the old soft link and replace it?

that sounds very strange but i'll have a punt at answering your q's
new link will not effect its run or anything else
if sprockets are shark toothed they need changing full stop ,thrown chains and excessive wear arent fun
chains streach thats why you use the rear adjusters, if your at full adjustment Do change chain cos it may look good but you cant see the internal damage (a broken chain while riding aint fun FACT)
davie tbh mate getting the extra couple of 100 mile on a "fair few 1000 chain" just aint worth the risk, chain snaps rear locks up you practice your mid air acrobatics, bike trys to slide for 3rd base cost mmmmmmm sizeable, new chain and sprockets £70 peice of mind priceless, and thats not taking into account recovery bordom or sheer hastle and annoyance

But TBH letting your mate nick your rear wheel after the chain goes bang is very helpful, so fire into it! :-P

What I'm wondering it why the devil you would replace one link? Do you need to shorten it from a huge gearing change or something?

It's not that the chain has streached or sprockets have worn that much.

It's just that I want to remove the chain and replace it due to some swing arm issues.

but how far do you let a chain wear before replacing it if you need to split it?
If it is 50% through it's life and need to split it, will a replacement link do or do you just replace the chain and sprockets as a matter of course.

If a chain is only 25% through it's life, it still would have bedded in and streached but would you still be happy with replacing the whole lot for one link?

yes the vulchers come out and have off with your brand new avon storms futher cemmenting your misery as you jump into the recovery wagon for the return trip from scotland to preston along some glorious biking roads

tbh yes i would be happy to just replace origianl soft link in the case above (up to 50%) after that i would get new
the only thing i would say is if you can do the repairs to the swing arm without removing chain (ive done this) thats a better bet all round

If you are removing the swingarm you don't need to break the chain either to remove it or the swingarm

The swing arm is off, but the chain is still looped round the frame.
I want to remove the chain.
The question still remains, can I still use the chain or have I to buy new chain & sprockets?

Eh, is the pointy very different from the curvy? It doesn't loop round the frame on the curvy.
