First three days with an SV
 

Hello there,

been lurking for a while trying to learn about the SV and on Saturday I took the plunge and bought a 2005 650s in black.

Bike is in great condition, engine sounds sweet, no rattles, fitted with a datatool alarm and a shiny remus can that makes a great noise.

I have a quick ride around town to check everything is working well and can find no problems or noises that I don't like.

I get home and buy a few bits on ebay for it.

Cut to this evening and I take it out for a run around town, enjoy the disapproving looks from people when they hear the can. I join the dual carriageway to get home quickly as its getting cold. I wind it up to 60 and BANG, lots of noise and the back wheel locks solid, fortunately I am going in a straight line and I manage to keep it upright and get it off the carriageway.

The thing is totally locked up. Plenty of oil in the engine, chain in good nick and properly adjusted. but even with the clutch in the rear wheel is solid. the slack in the chain is moving slightly, so its not the rear wheel spindle.

So a call to the dealer first thing in the morning, and they can come and get it from my house as the AA had to drop it here tonight.

Question is what went wrong? I don't want the dealer to fob me off and do the minimum work he can get away with. Might be best if I get the money back in full, but you know how hard that will be.

Shame, I had completed 20.4 miles and was looking forward to some proper miles.

So any ideas what could have locked it up like that? The starter will not spin the motor at all so I suspect something major has broken.

Feeling good about keeping it up though.

Oh dear...

Well for starters, welcome to the forum.

I'm not mechanically minded, but for some reason I want to say gearbox.

So did you buy from a dealer? Did it come with warranty? If this happened to me I'd probably take it back for a refund as I'd want shot of the bike quite quickly! I can't remember if there is a cooling off period or anything with buying second hand bikes.

Can you change gear? If so can you get it into neutral and start it?

I'd take off the sprocket cover see if there is anything to be seen there and/if the output shaft is locked solid (even in gear there is a certain amount of back and forth you should be able to do).

Unless it is something silly and simple (hard to see what that would be) and assuming you got it from a dealer I'd just ask for a full refund.

Yes, came from a dealer, I won't name them until I get their response, seems like it might be gearbox but its locked with the clutch in so not sure, going to push for either complete refund or complete replacement of the engine/box.

It will go intro neutral, but the starter wont spin, the lights dim and the alarm chirps, so I suspect the engine is solid

My confidence in the bike has been smashed, so might be better just to have the refund.

Sounds to me like the clutch has broken and jammed.

If it was *just* gearbox then you should be able to start it with clutch in.
If it was engine you should be able to push it in neutral or with clutch in.
If it was rear wheel then you should be able to start it in neutral with clutch in.

Of course it could be bits from one failure jamming something else...

Not worth getting gearbox/engine replaced, refund and new bike IMO.

Happy ending to this saga today, Dealer has arranged a newer replacement with less miles on, so still in the SV clan, hopefully this one will last longer than 20.4 miles :D

That's great news. The dealer doesn't have to replace the bike, they could just keep fixing yours, which'd mean (potentially) a lot of downtime. Well done to your dealer for looking after you!

I think you should name the dealer.Dealers that do the right thing should benefit from a bit of a plug on here just as much as a slating for the **** ones.

I have no problem naming the dealer, but I want to take delivery of the new one first, just to be sure.
