Say what?!
the local council are kicking up. In southampton all the english cabby's have started putting stickers of st george cross saying "english speaking driver" in the back window of their cabs.
this is the golden bit, the council want them got rid of because it could offened non english speaking drivers.......... Say what??? i think they're really missing the point there  |
Re: Say what?!
Surprised I ain't. For some reason just being English seems to be offensive, as decided by the er... English. :-s

Re: Say what?!
Playing Devils Advocate here...
ALL cabbies in Southampton, and I'm sure all councils in the country, have to prove they have good English speaking skills, if not they don't get a license. Same with knowledge of the local area, which is another of the concerns of some customers, they don't know certain routes. I dont think it's ALL English speaking cabbies G, just from one company. Could be wrong there of course. Personally if some cab companies are allowed to advertise the fact they employ women only I see no reason why they cannot put a sticker in a window saying English speaking driver.... |
Re: Say what?!
Well the cabbies should then put a sticker next to the other sticker saying 'Driver has legs'. Then they could claim they are merely stating random facts about themselves.

Re: Say what?!
I thought it was funny, how can someone who cant speak english be offended by a sign written in english

Re: Say what?!
I'm all for it.
Good on them! The other side is though, would you get in a cab with a sticker on the back with "punjabi speaking driver" on it? Mind you, if a donkey and cart pulled up outside my house after ordering a taxi, I probably wouldn't need to look for the sticker ;) |
Re: Say what?!
I think it's a great idea
I know which cabs to avoid because for the twenty minutes we're driving he'll do nothing but tell me how the immigrants are ruining the country and I should vote BNP... Give me an Indian bloke who asks me where to and shuts up so I can relax for a few minutes any day... |

Re: Say what?!
The local college in Accy refused to fly the St George's flag on St George's Day, in case they offended any ethnic minorities. Doesn't seem to happen in Wales, Scotland or Ireland, or anywhere on the continent or the US either. "English" is becoming a dirty word, and the worst bit... we're doing it to ourselves.

Re: Say what?!
Don't get me started on cab drivers - we rang for a taxi on Saturday night to go out and he turned up 30 mins late. He then blamed it on us for giving him the wrong address. Quite an achievement considering I have had the same address for the last 27 years. Moron. #-o
