Broken alternator magnet.
 
broke down on the way home the other day bike made a clinking noise on starting got bout 5 miles from home and the engine just died, this is what i have found- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HtRrOvG4Ak £600 just to replace the parts i can see have not opend the pots yet one of the magnets has disapeard from the rotor to!! much metal was found in oil....

Pretty rare but not a unique Suzuki failing, I know of an 2004 R1 that suffered similarly.

Oh dear. Time to get a second hand engine I think. That looks like a lot of work, and as you say, there may far more damage from gear fragments. bad luck dude, I've not seen that before!

Exactly what my first thought was when I saw the damage after you had mentioned a missing magnet.

Aye, but what caused the magnet to dislodge in the first place?

Would an hard drop on that side, cause it, and a previous owner just got a new engine cover and sold it on?

very possable! the prevous owner lives down the road:reaper: lol

it seemes i have just won an engine with a £335 bid on fleabay (2003) with 4300 miles on it, if this is all true then im about to swap that for my (2003) 43000 mile lump of broken metal this wknd(whoo (and in deed) hoo) it does look clean through, anyone wanna give us a hand?:smt100lol
