Should I get my bike serviced?

Hello folks,

Been thinking about service intervals on the SV. I know what the book says about when they should be done but mine has got done inbetween times.

Book says 600, 4000, 7500, 11000, 14500 or every year.

Mine has been done 697 (24/7/07), 1267 (9/4/08), 2777 (23/10/08), 4849 (12/3/09), 9188 (17/8/09), the bike has now done 12012 and increasing daily.

Whay would you guys do? Leave it to the 14500 service or get it done now, if you would get it done now which serivce, the 11000 or the 14500?

It's been 3k since the last one - service it now (as in oil, oil filter and plugs). Takes like half a day if that and will cost you circa £30. Then continue with the services as per the book.

Maybe that's me being a bit anal on servicing, dunno what other people do, but I do an oil change roughly every 3k (but do filter aswell while I'm down there as they cost a few quid) then do the main servicing points as per the book.

Get it done now as it is a while since it had a service. I'd do the 11500 service as this includes changing plugs and air cleaner (may not need doing but a garage should do it). It is an easy thing to do yourself if you moderately handy.

There is a school of thought that says you can use the KM schedule for miles i.e. 4K / 8K / 12K / etc miles for services and I agree with that if you use good quality oils and are sure everything is checked / changed as required each service. This is better if you DIY because then you know exactly what was done.

No harm in 3000 mile oil service intervals :D looks like you're having them every 6 months, which is something I try and stick by (every 6 months or 4000 miles, which ever is first) :)

should really get mine done then its been 9 months since the last one, buts its only done about 2500 miles in that time, bikes up to about 8500.

Oil change once a year will do fine :) This way, you retain the anti-oxidation properties of fresher oil :)

Did mine just before Christmas, only done 2000 miles since last dealer service. My lovley K3 has only 8000 miles on her clock now and she is geogeous. Love her to bits, especially that noise when she starts. Hopefully going to start putting the miles on her soon and have big plans for next year. The basic service was nice and easy, oils plugs and filters and I barely got my hands dirty. She does need a polish though to get that lovely silver shine back up on the paint.

Picked it up today. £184 in total, that included the following:

Strip and clean front brake, fit new HH pads (£40), fit new front wheel bearing (I supplied them), Spark plugs (£8.50), check air filter, adjust drive chain, change oil (£12.50), Oil filter (£5.80).

My first thought was bloody hell that expensive but he's only charged £90 for labour the rest are parts and VAT.

What do you guys think? Cheap or expensive????

Suppose it doesn't really matter if it expensive or not really because I don't have the time/knowledge to do it myself anyway!
