New Clutch Time
Rumour has it that I might finally stop being so lazy and rebuild my SV. I’m going to place an order from Wemoto for the complete gasket set but I also know I need a new clutch as the one in the engine came out in pieces. I had the same problem in the spare engine that I took a look at, and while between the two I could probably make a complete usable set it’s probably best to stick a new one in. So recommend me a clutch please…
Would I need the steel plates as well or will just new friction plates be acceptable? I would guess that depends on the condition of the ones I took out, so how do I tell if they need replacing? I’ve checked and the springs need replacing also. So will it just be friction plates and springs or the whole set, I which case which one to go for? As I’m ordering the gaskets from Wemoto I might as well get the clutch from there as well to combine the postage so selections from that site please, unless of course someone can suggest another (cheaper) place to get the clutch and gaskets from… |

ETA: Don't forget it's the RHS lever you pull to actuate the clutch :-dd ;) |
Re: New Clutch Time
I'll dig my overalls out : )
Just get the complete kit mate, as you know there's no point cutting corners or rushing things, look at the cat. I remeber it not being too much when I did it for the cat on the first rebuild in the kitchen, got about 8 of each plate and new springs for it, but make sure you torque them up right, other wise it's another trip to piston broke to drill em out ; ) |
Re: New Clutch Time
The plain plates rarely need replacement, if they do it should be apparent as they'll be either discoloured or warped. Both are easy to check.

Re: New Clutch Time
I've got a bit of bluing near the edge of a couple of the plates, not much though. Should I replace or not?

Re: New Clutch Time
Check for warp, you'll need a flat surface and a 0.1mm feeler gauge.
Lay each plate on the flat surface and with your feeler gauge see if it's got more than 0.1mm-worth of non-straightness. In general terms, (ie not SV specific), when they're warped you won't need the gauge to tell, but if there's only a little bit of discolouration I'll ever-so-slightly lean towards a prediction that they're probably OK. Maybe. But I woudn't take my word for it. Not seeing as I haven't actually seen them, that would be be daft. |
Re: New Clutch Time
You make a good point.
The discoloration isn't that bad, and I can't find any warping. But caution is probably the best bet here, so a complete set it is. Thanks. |
