Bike Tour

Hi guys, me and my friend are thinking of going for a short bike tour this summer, mainly to just ride some new roads and have fun.

I only passed my test last June so not very experienced, his bike is 20 years old and he only rides infrequently at the moment. I only tell you this so you know our level of "expertise" prior to giving me advice.

We would like to go out for just a long weekend, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and possibly Monday as well. Would be happy to stay in a B&B or camp but would like to keep the same "base" for the whole weekend and go on rides emanating from there.

We both come from Bexhill in East Sussex so im thinking of 1 day riding to our destination and 1 day riding back with possibly 2 days riding some good roads whilst there.

At the moment I am ruling France out due to riding on the other side of the road and being new probably not being the best idea. Anybody have any suggestions of places to go/stay and routes to ride whilst there?

Continent or UK?

I suggest a short (2 ngt) UK based trip first if you intend to camp. That way you'll figure out exactly what you need and do not need to take.

A couple of places we've stayed:

NEW FOREST

PORLOCK, SOMERSET

Or EURO campsites

Keep an eye out for Org trips, what about the Plan O Man, or AR10. There are always weekends away. The Peaks last year was great

Join the YHA which means a cheap bed and no camping equipment to carry, this gives you loads of options where you can stay and explore the local roads.

I'd head North up the A1 for approx 4hrs (only hald a day if you set off early ;) then do Yorkshire Dales/County Durham/Scottish Borders. Lots of nice roads, Some where like Teesdale could be a good base for heading North and South from. For more details of the area you could ask in the Pennine Massive section.
