Chainsaw oil in scottoiler? Is it true?

I hear a rumor going round that you can use chainsaw lube oil in your scott-oiler and get the same effect.

Is this true? Has anyone tried?

Not heard of this myself, but through the power of Google, apparantly it's not very wise.

Why waste money? - many folk use used engine oil.

About the engine oil. I think I'll be trying this first

Now need to find a bottle with the right size hole to fill the oil from :)

The one that came with oiler :-)

i used chainsaw oil with no problems, mixed it 50/50 with some cheap crap engine oil that came out of a blown up motor.

I have some ex-Honda XR600 engine oil going spare about 2-300 miles of use only, mixed with various metallic bits of engine for "sparkly" effect, and paraffin from rinsing out the dry sump tank, only 5 quid for ~3 litres*. It'd be great for making a nice mess, anyone??

*P&P is extra.

Chain saw oil does work but may be a bit thick at this time of year. I know a few people that use it during summer though.

Tiz really .... at least double any other sort of oil ...... makes a difference, espeically if like me you like to have the flow rate pretty high (in the winter)

re. chainsaw oil ...... just make sure you get the chainsaw CHAIN oil .... I think thats where that first report was going wrong ...

Screwfix ... its about £3 a litre compared to Scottoiler at about £6 per 500ml IIRC !!!!

personally i dont know what the scottoil lube looks like but i do use chainsaw oil on my chainsaws.....obviously.
it is quite 'stringy' so if the scottoil is similar then why not, its a chain at the end of the day.
personally though i would just get 5 litres of the cheapest engine oil, i use that most of the time but i was told the best stuff to use was used engine oil for the chainsaw. bit messy though if the flow rate is too high.
cost nothing if you can put up with the mess.
