a knocking noise is not normal. It could be something simple like incorrect air/fuel mixture or bad fuel causing pre-detonation ("knocking"). Or it could be some bearing faliure or something on the crank. Is there enough oil in the engine? Is the oil fresh?

Check that Josef Fritzl wasn't the previous owner... otherwise there might be a secret compartment back there.

But seriously, knocking noises aren't a good thing.

A regular knocking that varies with oil pressure could be the big end bearings.

Pinking (knocking) due to timing or fuelling issues is most noticable at low revs and high throttle openings because that's when the cylinder pressure is highest

Loose engine mounts and dangling exhaust systems can show up at a variety of RPMs

So, definitely worth tracking it down.

Keith.

Could the knocking perhaps be the reason it was sold as a non-runner?
