Drivers comments on Motorcycle Article

Read an article in the local rag about the "Think! Bike" safety campaign. Just thought I would share the comments from a driver posted about the article.......

"Anything to improve safety has got to be a good thing but motorcyclist also have to take their share of the blame for the current rise in motorcycle accidents, because they are only on two wheels they have far more freedom to move about on the road and they need to think has that car seen me/will it see me. Also you only have to look at cars in a car park to see that the mirrors are not being used by their position, drivers need to realise that what is going on all around them and not just what’s in front you see many instances where it is quite obvious that the driver hasn’t got a clue what’s going on behind or beside them. Motorcyclist are very vulnerable and should ride accordingly and the fact they are virtually untouchable as regards to law enforcement only encourages them to ride their bikes without regard for the law."

:smt064 "untouchable as regards to law enforcement" what a Coc.kerel.

meh he's right about motorcyclists being vulnerable and should ride accordingly thats just basic knowledge you get drilled into your head in training but if he isnt one himself then he should stfu tbh.

Idiot. Totally destroyed what little sense his argument might have made with the closing sentence.

"should take their share of the blame".
Motorcyclists should take the blame if these accidents are all our fault. But clearly the "Think! Bike" campaign is based on statistics which prove they are not.

Chip on his shoulder about something?

Yes we should know that most cage drivers are useless when it comes to seeing a bike

So this is bikers fault that a cage driver isnt using there mirrors???

I know most bikers ride according to the conditions, cage drivers should learn to drive.
Surely instead of making the bike test hard they should make the car test hard which is where the highest cause of accidents comes from.
The Yanks teach how to drive in school and are taught better hazard awareness because they are taught the risks more maybe this should be taught in school/college in the UK if it could help.

its simple, before your allowed to drive a car you must complete 5000 miles on a ****ty little scooted, that way cage idiots will learn to use the mirrors and eyes

its actually a minor in the driving test to do a shoulder check :smt107, something i found very bizarre as i'd been riding 2 years when i took mine

We have had the argument here before and it always ruffles a few feathers but there is a school of thought that says any accident you are involved in is always partially your fault. Not legally, as in insurance or criminal liability, but there is always something you could have done to anticipate and prevent the incident.I dont wholly agree with this POV but as bikers its certainly worth thinking about, because we always come off worse, whoever was technically at fault.

some valid points ther though, motorcyclists are more manouverable - correct lane position can reduce your risk of an accident (it saved me a couple of months back). And the mirrors thing, thats true aswell. I look in peoples mirrors and see if they are checking them. Also, if I can see them in heir mirror, then they'll see me if they decide to look. Its not our fault for someone not checking their mirrors, but if we put ourselves in a position that when they fail to look in them, they do hit us, then we didn't help ourselves in the first place.

Individuals do need to have a think about their motorcycle accidents - could they do anything in the future to reduce the risk? For example, after my accident last year, I am more careful coming over hill-crests.

common sense and forward planning, along with remembering the road is a road and not a race-track (and that means it isnt a race-track super smooth gloriously grippy surface!) will help us all out and help us to avoid accidents. A little consideration for other road users, even when oyu might think "whats the point, they dont conisder me" will help things aswell.

And I thought this thread was just going to be slagging cagers about accidents that weren't the bikers fault.

Police motorcyclists, generally considered to be the highest trained street riders in the UK, subscribe to this POV.

I must hold my hands up and admit to nearly having a ding with a bike while in the cage last night.
Roundabout in the dark, car coming from the right but with plenty of time for me to go across in front of him,the guy on the bike came round in knee down mode and overtook/undertook the car on the inside.I did not see him till the very last minute
It is not a dual laned roundabout and as a biker I am aware of bikes but this geezer appeared from nowhere going like a bat out of hell
Had we collided, due to the position of the vehicles it would have looked like I pulled out infront of him,but he wasn't there when I pulled out.

Yeh well tbh if a biker rides round like a loon, then he can't complain if someone doesn't see him.
