Dental advice, splint, damm uncomfortable

This damm splint thing holding my front tooth in is so damm uncomfortable. Feels like there is 3 inch of Araldite adhesive behind my front teeth.

Why has my dentist done this? I have to have impressions done next week and the tooth and root removed the following week. As it is preventing me biting anything, I am somewhat limited in what I can eat. Even a slice of toast has to be cut up into "soldiers" to bypass the requirement to bite it.

Why not whip the damm thing out when I went on Monday instead of prolonging it for 2 weeks? The only thing I can think off is that he may want to get the impressions done before my gum is ripped open
