Team GB Olympic shooters have to train abroad!

I stumbled across this just now... bored in work so reading about the XM8 rifle which lead to the G36 which lead to CO19 which lead to police guns which lead to gun laws.

Following the Dunblane massacre, the government passed the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 which means that as of 1997 handguns have been almost completely banned for private ownership. Even the UK's Olympic shooters fall under this ban; shooters can only train in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or abroad.

Following the awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games to London, the government announced that special dispensation would be granted to allow the various shooting events to go ahead, as had been the case previously for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. However, it was still illegal for Britain's top pistol shooters to train in England, Scotland or Wales. As a result, British shooters currently spend 20 to 30 days a year training in Switzerland, and receive no public sports funding because their events are considered illegal in the UK.

Surely you either ban hand guns or you don't. You can't just say "Well this lads got some tallent, he's exempt from the gun laws". Where and how would he learn of his talent anyway?

Personally, I think the ban is a great thing. I've known three people who have owned guns, and they were all class A wierdos!

One older bloke had a rifle delivered to our work, unpacked it and spent an hour waving it about and boasting what a great rifle it was. This takes on a darker tone when you realise he never moved out his Mothers house, and was in his late fifties. This was also the bloke who would brake in to heated rants about those effin b****es on the production line stealing mens jobs... :smt104

Ban guns today
Ban bikes tomorrow?

Be careful how you support laws with good intentions which then don't live up to them - still plenty of gun crime about I see

Knee Jerk reaction by jerks

Bikes are designed as cheap or fun transport.

The only thing hand guns are designed for is to kill other people. Why would anyone need a gun if they didn't want to kill another person?

Having said that i fired some guns when in Vegas. Great fun!!! Still wouldn't want people walking the streets with them in their pockets though. Even if they were coppers.

Oh absolutely. If we cant use the law to attack other peoples way of life just because you don't like them then what's the point?

I used to shoot quite a bit, my parents still do.

The hand-gun legislation may have been done with good intentions, but there were plenty of reasonable middle-grounds that were totally ignored by the government, including the findings of the official enquiery. This found that the man who was responsible for Dunblane had been reported by 2 gun clubs as being unsafe, something that was never followed up.

Of course it's easier just to ban everything and fuss later. Gun crime's up, events we used to be very good at now can't be practiced and we have to bend the rules everytime we want to host a gaming event. Never has paper had so much legislation passed to protect people poking holes in it.

Win.
