Fully synthetic and the clutch?
I was told that Suzuki bikes made before a certain year could not take fully synthetic oil due to it not agreeing with the clutch? Does anybody know what the year is (I have an SK1)? Also, assuming the clutch can take it, is it worth bothering with fully synth on an sv650?

Re: Fully synthetic in an SV650?
You must have big pockets considering fully synth in an SV. It won't do anything for it.
save a bit of brass and use a recognised semi. |
Re: Fully synthetic in an SV650?
clutch slip time :) dont bother just use semi

Re: Fully synthetic in an SV650?
You know it could cause a problem, why you even considering it? Got a free supply or something?

Or read the "engine oil" sticky above where all your questions are answered.

Thanks all for the advice. Putoline semi it will be then. Just out of interest, why? Is it because the sv engine doesn't rev too high? |

As per your last line I believe there's a debate on as to whether it does or not. Either way semi's fine...and cheaper. Note: putoline actually do a v-twin semi which I try to use, not 100% if it's actually a different formula or whether it's just a different label. |
Re: Fully synthetic and the clutch?
So long as the oil you put in your motorcycle conforms with the JASO standards (sid squid put a sticky thread up in this section of the forum discussing this) then it will not affect your clutch. I know spannerman recoomneds using fully synthetic oils, and I know he uses castrol oils. He's never had anyone come back to him with a problem as far as I know, regarding the use of fully synthetic oil and its affect on the clutch
I have been using castrol semi synthetic for a few years, but with a new clutch in my bike, I've replaced the old semi synth with fully synth castrol oil. Yes, that may be overkill for my bike, but thre is evidence to suggest fully synthetic oils can aid in keeping an engine cooler than semi-synth oils...helpfull if using the bike for lots of town work (rush hour commutes through london) oh, for what its worth, oil changes every year or every 4000 miles :) oil degrades with time you see |
