rec'd Yoshi can for the SRAD, one of the bolt holes has been stripped though - can I tap it?
received the Yoshimura RS3 can for the SRAD yesterday & fitted this morning. It's held on with 3 x bolts in a triangle shape (same or similar to the svThou).
Only problem is one of the bolt holes on the can has been stripped - the bolt which fits in the hole, turned so many times till it was about 2mm from being full tightened, and then just turned & turned & didn't get any tighter. Took it for a quick test ride around the block after fitting this morning, got back after about 3 mins to find that the bolt has dropped out. The hanging strap and remaining 2 bolts are tight on but obviously the exhaust is blowing ever so slightly... sounds fecking amazing though :D So what are my options? Is it possible to tap a bigger hole with a new thread or is there a chance of knackering the can? |
Re: rec'd Yoshi can for the SRAD, one of the bolt holes has been stripped though... can I tap it?
As long as there is enough material such that the larger thread hole doesn't make the area surrounding the hole too slight, then there's no reason not to tap it out a larger size. However if this would be too large for the above reason, (and for preference even if it's not), I'd take the can to a bike shop, car garage or someone similar in your area and ask them to put a Helicoil or similar thread insert in it - this will only be a few pounds - which has the advantage of reusing the original size bolt so all the fixings will be the same and won't require you to open out the hole in the exhaust pipe's flange which may be necessary if the hole were opened out for a larger diameter bolt.

cheers squid, heard helicoils mentioned a few times but never needed to use or look them up :) unfortunately the bolt has dropped off the bike but I've got 2 for reference so can get another one :)
thanks again |

not a bloody clue off the top of my head, could be an m6 at a guess and it's about 20/25mm long. Will pull one of the others out for reference

From memory that's an M8.
But then my memory isn't what it used to be - not that I can remember what it was like anyway. |
