Restriction and the law?

What is the law regarding ECU 33hp restrictors on the SV (or any bike)? Does it need a restriction certificate to be legal or is it up to the boys in blue to prove that it isn't restricted?

Sorry if this has been talked about before but the search came up nil (I'm probably doing it wrong :D)

Re: ECU Law

Law says you must ride a bike with <33bhp.
The certificate is not mentioned in law anywhere.

An insurer can require a certificate.

In case of a crash/claim the police/insurers could well check your bike for restrictors whether you have a cert. or not.

It is up to you to check with your insurer about it. Alternatively you could read the small print very carefully.

IMO choose an insurer who doesn't require a certificate and fit a secondhand 33bhp ECU.

Thanks Yorkie, although I think someone my age will struggle to find an affordable insurer that will not require certification. I may have to cut my losses and just pay extra for the certification, but hopefully not :D. Could I buy a second hand restrictor then pay a garage (an insane amount no doubt) to install and certify it? Would that be cheaper by much?

just make sure you get it in writing from the insurer and the underwriter if they say you don't need a cert ....

I got told from some nob just bagging a sale that i dint need one turns out the underwriters want one still going through a load of ****3 with it .

there is no law for one though as long as the bike is restricted .

No, the ones who require a cert are in the minority.
