SV on a trackday?
 

Morning all.
Thinking/wanting to do a track day this year but had a few queries.

1)To track the SV or not? its my only bike, first track day so is there a high risk of stacking it?
2) Would it do well on a track? Still has stock suspension and PR2 tyres.
My thoughts where that its my first track day, so wouldnt be riding the bikes limits or ragging it to the extent of needing oil change or new pads.

Just wondered peoples thoughts?

everybodies different but i suspect like most you haven't been riding to long so the bike can probably still out perform yourself so to speak. after you've had a few track days you may want to take things further. Just be very careful especially in the Novice group as nobody cares about stuffing it up the inside and sending you wide etc. Just take your time. Also remove your number plate as its been known that insurance companies send spotters out just incase you fall off and try to claim it happenedon the road. Also remove mirrors and cover your speedo. Get use to hearing and feeling gear changes rather than doing it at a set speed.

I took my SV on a novices trackday last year without any serious modifications and it was fine, even with BT021's front and back. It's plenty fast enough in the corners but can't keep up with the bigger bikes on the straights. The only real drawback I found was that the front tyre was quite badly melted by the end of the day and is now on the wear markers after about 2500 miles.

You will be fine. I ride my SV all year round, and that includes a trackday every other month. Just be sure to drop your tyre pressures before your first session, go steady while warming them up (first 2 laps, for example) and remember to put air back in your tyres afterwards. enjoy the day!

I did a few track days on the SV when it was standard, fine for a few outings in standard form, I used to use Pirelli Diablo Strada (a sports touring tyre) when I first started.

And if you get the bug there are a fair few cheap mods to do to it to make it more suited to track.

CB1000Rsteve why do you advise to remove mirrors and cover speedo? I tend not to need the rev counter even on normal road use?!

because some people consider it a distraction. Certainly remove the mirrors, but i've never felt the need to cover the speedo because i've never looked at it while on track.

Yeah they may be distracting, but surely they must be important to know if someone comes belting up behind you to overtake so u dont pull across infront ect?!

It's the person overtaking's responsibility, I did shoulder checks anyway which actually saved me and the bike a couple of times but apparently you're not supposed to do that.
I wouldn't do one without good crash bungs but otherwise A-okay.

The above is my sv with sport tourer tyres on; as you'll see you get bent over on the straights by the bigger bikes but it's still muchos enjoyable.

Also check you have a reasonable amount of meat left on your pads, oil in the engine and brake fluid in the reservoirs, not that there is likely to be too much wear. And keep hydrated through the day.

Taping mirrors is a lot easier than removing them. Different places have different taping requirements wrt lights etc.
