Is a tank pad really necessary?

I have an SV650S and considering whether to put a tank pad / protector sticker on. However, I've noticed some folks just go without and their tanks are just fine.

If you're generally careful about the zipper on your jacket, and don't lean too much into your tank, do you really need a tank pad? Any folks who have never used tank pads on their SV have issues or regret not applying one on?

Thanks again!!

Might depend on your jacket/zip. If you don't want one, check the tank for marks and scratches if you notice any, get one then.

Worth it IMO, but it depends on your zips.
if you dont really like them all that much, why dont you get a clear one, are less obvious than patterend/coloured ones.

Purely depends on your leathers but IMO yes, far better to have one and not need it than not and do IYSWIM. I managed to scratch my SV's tank within the very first ride, wish I'd got one before I rode it now. I went for a CF one which IMO went quite well with the black.

You can *just* see it here

Dunno, never ridden without a tank pad. But where my knees rub the tank the paint has dulled/scuffed. So if plain leather can do that, I would guess a zip would scratch it up pretty bad. I've now got clear sticky plastic where my knees rub to stop it getting worse
