Pipe broken?
 

So i noticed my sv was unusually loud today so i started having a little look about only to find that just have the down pipe but before it splits in to two pipes for the exhausts it has completely broken off...

First off any idea how this would happen? something i've done or just general wear and tear?

Second, would it be ok to just weld it back together?

the photo doesn't really show anything because i tried clamping them together but it hasn't worked very well...

Yep welding works a treat, just ensure you spend more than 10 minutes on it if you're concious of aesthetics .

Has it actually split/broken or is it just coming apart at the join (the photo you've took is of a section of the pipe where two seperate bits meet) if the two bits are just coming away from each other that's fine a clamp should do it.
Oh and that clamp should be like more than an inch left.

mines completely split like the first picture in the link you posted but they are still inline, the clamp works ok however you can feel air escaping if you put your hand over the clamp? not sure if this is a problem though, should be alright atleast until i get it welded though

Common place for headers to go. Not sure if the SV ones go into a ordinary steel join, there's lots of joins in that part, main headers are SS.

Mate said his bandit ones were ordinary steel at the collectors. No a good place as this is where all the carp collects
