To answer your question about lacquering....I believe not - can't remember where I read that (saw the same question in the last week somewhere). The only option is to get them chromed (or be prepared for regular polishing!).

you can lacquer them but you need to use very expensive lacquer so it doesn't dull the sine to much

Which lacquer works? I guess the reason I saw given was that the lacquer can't key to the metal work (which primer does). Expensive because the lacquer has to include the primer's properties?

How does lacquer dull the shine btw? That's the point of lacquer, to make it shiny!

Lol but - lacquer is transparent, that's the point! It is meant to make things shinier. I started to read that link, but 79 pages - I haven't got the patience  - I did read the first 10 though, it sounded like he wasn't/hasn't lacquered his own stuff? I saw a mention that lacquer might dull the finish but no other reference to it. Is there something I'm missing in the last 69 pages, lol?

Fair enough, as I mentioned I'm too lazy to read all the pages ;)

I would be interested to find out how the lacquer held out, though, as if the problem is the lacquer having something to key to, then it's the kind of thing that shows up later (flaking, etc). I too thought it would work, until the keying issue was mentioned (which makes sense, it's why you get flaking if you paint directly on really smooth surfaces without sanding them to a particular finish first).

If they're dull I would have thought it'd be possible to get some T-cut or equivalent to shine it up again...a lot of the finish is determined by how smooth the top layer is, so making sure it's as smooth as possible will help with that.

not sure i think its a bit like the lacquer is not as clear as glass so its a bit like having slightly frosted glass in front of a mirror
