What can I do to be more mechanically minded and able?

Im sorry for asking allot of questions but I seem to get far better and deff more responses on this forum as opposed to another one I have been a member of for a while.

How did all you guys learn to do so much on bikes,I read some of the posts and have no idea what you are banging on about,I know if I dont start learning stuff then It will cost me allot in the long run due to having to go to mechanic for everything.

What can I do to be more mechanically minded and able?

Best bet if you're a noob with the spannering lark is to spend some time with an experienced mechanical person watching them do stuff and being talked through it. Tricky bit is finding the right person prepared to do it.

Most stuff follows similar basic principles, once you get the idea of how things tend to be done you can apply it to other stuff. It's very similar concept to using compter-mabobs, things are done in basically similar ways so you can guess the next step often even with completely new apps.

Useful exercise is getting hold of an old petrol lawnmower and taking it apart, then putting it back together.

Sadly the days of kids growing up with Meccano seem to have gone.

I had meccano, and little engines to make cars and cool stuff like that! :D

i just picked it up from asking on here, but i did know the basics from earlier bikes. you can do home college courses on basic mechanics if your rich.

Find a mate who's a bit handy (not literally a mate, although it worked for me LOL) and sit and watch/assist. Little bit here, a little bit there, you'll soon pick stuff up. I'm learning, ever so sloooooooowly :D

I'm from Salford, Manchester and would love to learn a few bits and pieces if anyone is prepared to assist.

As a fellow male you can fix any problem if you swear at it enough

Re: question

I have enrolled on a basic motorcycle mechanics course in September so hopefully that helps and I have a Haynes manual. The trick is to know when something wrong and then fix it not find out when it is terribly wrong because you are sitting on the side of the road(thank god for the AA)
