Fork oil - air gap in standard forks?
 

:tongue: im currently looking at uprating my forks to 9.5N springs and 15-20w oil, does anybody know what the air gap for this set up should be? i weigh 21 stone if that has any bearing on the airgap?

also, what is the effect more or less air gap has on the forks?

any help would be apriciated, cheers !!!!!!

Air gap makes the forks more progressive at the bottom of their travel on brakes.

Smaller you make gap the harder it will be on brakes.

so just to clarify a smaller gap will make the fork action harder near the end of travell eg- when braking?

When I fitted my Hagon springs the gap was 140mm, using 15w which was a bit to heavy for my weight. I'm only 10.5 stone. I should have used 10w or lower maybe

But that might be a starter for ten for you, using 15 or 20w.

Yes. I can't remember the standard gap offhand but you want to use as small a gap as possible without running into bottoming problems.

Plus all oil is not the same, viscosity changes with weather too.

Do they specify air gap as standard?I thought Suzuki just specified how much oil went in---?250ml???

ahh right, cheers, so what kind of gap would i use for 95N springs and say 20w oil?
bear in mind i aint small at 21 stone!!!!

the air gap in my haynes manual suggests 103mm for the standered set up

I'd try 120 and keep your eye on how much travel you using regularly. If you are into bottoming cones all the time then you need more oil or firmer springs.
