car tyre question
 

Ideally looking for someone with a bit of real knowledge here.

Got a nail in an almost new runflat tyre. it was driven about 40 miles after the warning came on and when stopped still had about 18psi (until i pulled the nail out.(dead centre of tread)

Called the garage and they say that runflat tyres cannot be repaired.

my limited understanding is that by running a runflat tyre deflated weakens the sidewalls (ie book says only drive for 100mls whilst flat) however i am tight and loathe to replace a tyre with 80 miles on it.

does anyone have any idea (not hearsay) if it would be ok to repair or do i really need to replace this. thanks.:smt013

i was always led to believe that you couldnt patch run flats too! but girl at work is having one done on her car at a local garage! maybe best not going to a kwikfit/budget and going to a smaller place. maybe try JK tyres along the road in longcroft behind the cotton house! (you do live in denny dont you?!?!)

40 miles on a highly deflated tyre seems quite a bit to me and personally I wouldn't take the risk.

I did however take the risk on a punctured side wall once and I was fine.

Ouch, buy 4 off normal tyres and keep 3 remaining runflats to put back on when you sell it :P

A new one is needed im afraid, you can't repair a runflat tyre. personally I would do as ethariel has suggested.

I fit tyres and exhausts for a living (unfortunately). lol

With 18psi remaining it isn't as bad, I think the dire warnings of doom come if it is run at 0psi as that would really heat the whole carcass.

Thanks for the replies folks, having spoken at length to she who must be obeyed there will be a new tyre geting fitted.**&%$$ as she is uncomfortable driving on a repaired one. However if it was my car it Would be getting repaired

id have it repaired, loads of people run around for hundreds or thoasands of miles with 18psi in with no trouble, i think it might be to do with the 'no win no fee' culture why some people wont repair them!

finding some1 to do it may be a sticking point though, we wont touch them where i work.
